Wendell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and master mechanic, was born on November 15, 1937, in Collinsville, OK to David Franklin Mount and Muriel Ethel (Oaks) Mount. He passed away on March 17, 2024, in Bartlesville, OK.
On February 28, 1956, Wendell married Frankie Haiflich, the girl who grew up across the street. Wendell and Frankie had three children, Kelly, Alan, and Shona and the couple made their first home in Tulsa where Wendell supervised the operation of a Phillips 66 service station; not a gas station, but a Full-Service Automotive Station. From there, the couple relocated to Hominy where Wendell leased and operated a similar Phillips 66 station. One constant throughout his life was that he was good at working with tools in his hands and was likely a self-taught, gifted master mechanic. Later, Wendell would try his hand at running livestock and laying pipelines. He proudly worked for many years as the maintenance supervisor at Keystone State Park. The final leg of his work-life was at an Atwood’s Home and Ranch store, working in the assembly/repair department. Wendell was a US Army veteran. He was honorably discharged after completing a tour of duty serving overseas. Wendell was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge; he eventually earned the distinction of being a Master Mason. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tending to his vegetable garden. Like many men, Wendell also enjoyed relaxing in his recliner. He was a fan of the OSU Cowboys. He and Frankie enjoyed square dancing and they were in fact two of the founders of the Double-Eagle Square Dance Club in Hominy. He enjoyed family gatherings whatever the occasion, whether it was birthdays, holidays, or other family events. Family was most important to him.
He is survived by his daughter, Kelly May; son, Alan Mount and wife, Jill; grandchildren, Heather Shanta and husband Randal, Rebecca Mount, Elizabeth Garrison and husband, Zach, and Nathaniel Echols; great-grandson, Brayden Shanta; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Mount; daughter, Shona Echols; grandson, Brian May; parents, Frank and Muriel Mount; and sisters, Emogene Linden, Norma Johnson-Whiteside, Barbara Taylor, Sherrill Hearn, and Anita Mount.
Memorial donations in Wendell’s memory may be made to The Journey Home, 900 NE Washington Blvd, Bartlesville, OK 74006.
