Violet June Spencer

Funeral Services for Violet June Spencer, 84, of Sperry, were held Monday December 1, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Sperry, OK. The Reverend Don Queen officiated and burial was in the Osage Garden Cemetery in Skiatook, OK. Arrangements and services were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.

Violet was born September 24, 1924 in Wildhorse, OK to Lyman and Grace (Counsil) Taylor. She passed away November 26, 2008 in Oklahoma City, OK.

Her father had moved to Oklahoma for a job at Sunray Oil Company from Monett, Kansas a few years before Violet was born. When her mother got ill, Violet got to go to school as a young baby with her older sister, Neva. When she was older she attended Mountain View School, a one-room grade school. Violet graduated high school in Hominy Oklahoma. After high school Violet worked in her sister's cafe in Skiatook for many years. Violet and John Spencer were married in 1951. After briefly living in Bisbee, AZ they moved to Tulsa near downtown where they welcomed their first child. Four years later they bought a farm house just north of Sperry where they lived many decades.
Violet was a devoted wife of 50 years and a loving stay-at-home mother to her two children, Sandy born in 1954 and John Jr. in 1963. She was a long-standing dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Sperry where she taught Sunday school, Bible School, served as a cook at Falls Creek for several years, kept children in the nursery, and cooked and served many, many, meals in the old Fellowship Hall. Violet and John made many life-long friends at the church who continued to be a blessing to her throughout her life.
"Granny June" was a committed grandmother who helped her grandchildren make the school bus in the mornings and always had iced tea and goodies to snack on. In the summers you would find her either in the garden planting, weeding, and picking or in the kitchen cooking, pickling, and canning.

She is survived by her;sister-in-law, Polly Taylor of Skiatook; daughter, Sandy Olsen of Overgaard, AZ; son, J.V. Spencer of Edmond, OK; three granddaughters, Brooke Watts of Redwood City, CA, Ragan Warner of Tempe, AZ, and Taylor Spencer of Edmond, OK; three nephews, Lyman Earl Taylor of Hominy, OK, Stanley Taylor of Skiatook, OK, and Lyle Taylor of Skiatook, OK; two nieces, Francis Phelps-Lytle of Hominy, OK, and Paula Wright of Skiatook, OK; six grandnephews; nine grandnieces; and many friends. Violet was also blessed to have family-like neighbors in Clancy & Tish Burill, Travis Cole, and Alisa Davenport as well as proclaimed grandchildren, Dalton Cole, Lane Cole, and Parker Ryan; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John V Spencer; sisters, Joy Hull and Neva Hurd; brother Lyman Taylor.
