Sallye Ann Smith

SMITH - Sallye Ann, passed from this life on June 11, 2008, at the age of 76. Sallye passed away in her home, which she loved, with her 2 sons at her side. She was born on January 26, 1932, in Arkansas City, KS. Sallye was raised near the TU campus by her parents O. A. and Nina Moreland. She was an only child and the light of her parent's lives. Sallye graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1950 and after graduation married the love of her life Bobby Joe Smith. For the next 49 wonderful years B. J. and Sallye lived as one and were inseparable. B. J. served in the United States Marine Corp and then they returned to the Turley area and began working tirelessly in the family business, Smith's Supermarket which operated for over 50 years.
In 1963, under the direction of J. A. Smith, B. J. and Sallye opened the First National Bank of Turley, now Freedom Bank of Oklahoma. B. J. and Sallye then worked together in the bank for many years. After B.J.'s death in 1999, Sallye served as the Chairman of the Board of Freedom Bank until her passing. Sallye was also the head of Smith Investments, as well as owning several race horses.
She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and was involved with numerous charitable organizations. Sallye loved to watch her horses race and loved all animals especially her cats and dog. She enjoyed traveling with B. J. in their motor home across the country many times, accompanied by their dear friends Drew and Trecia Wilson of Sperry. In her later years Sallye was not above playing a slot machine (always a penny machine) at a local casino and on very rare occasions might even sneak a cigarette. For all of Sallye's accomplishments, one that meant the most to her was being a mother to her boys and she was being a mother to her boys and she was the consummate Mom. Job well done, Sallye Smith!!
Sallye was preceded in death by: her parents Mr. & Mrs. O. A. Moreland; husband Bobby Joe Smith; and 1 son Dwight D. Smith. Sallye is survived by: sons Warren J. Smith and wife Tonya of Sperry and Dr. Justen Brent Smith of Sperry; sister-in-law, Priscilla Coulson of Tulsa; brother-in-law Dr. Donald L. Smith and wife Phyllis of Deland, FL, grandchildren, Bobie Joe Smith, Zachary Smith, Beau Smith, Chelsea Smith and Brady Dwight Smith. The Smith family would like to thank all the home health care providers who were so kind to Miss Sallye during her difficult journey. We would also like to thank all our friends who have been very dear to us for your wonderful support.
