Celebration of Life services for Rev. Albert Edward “Al” Shults, 77, of Tulsa, OK, were held Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Chapel in Sperry, OK. Pastor Dan Doak officiated, and burial was in Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, OK.
Al was born December 22, 1942 in St. Louis, MO to Herbert Wesley Shults and Mary Elizabeth (Lunsford) Bennett. He passed away August 16, 2020 in Tulsa, OK.
Al was raised by Herbert Shults and traveled all over the country growing up. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1960 and proudly served his country for 20 years while touring the world. After retiring from the Marines, Al graduated from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX in 1983. For 13 years, Al served as the chaplain at Mack Alford Correctional Center in Stringtown, OK. Al pastored several churches throughout his career before retiring from Turley Baptist Church in 2014. Al was a vivacious reader and loved politics, golf, and sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Julia Shults of Tulsa; daughter, Kara Shults; son, Matthew Shults and wife, Kari; granddaughter, Sarah Shults of Alderson, OK; grandson, Andrew Sturgeon of Tulsa, Isobel Shults of Tulsa and Oliver Shults of Tulsa; cousins, Edgar Shults of Dyersburg, TN, Eddie Shults of Dyersburg, TN and Jeff Shults of Dyersburg, TN; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Shults; uncle, Edgar Shults, Sr.; and aunt, Bea Shults.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Al’s memory be made to Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX or to the Tulsa Area United Way.
Arrangements and services were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.
