Funeral services for Melvin Leroy “Pops” Smith, of Sperry, were held Friday, September 2, 2011 at First Baptist Church in Sperry, OK. Reverend Roy Betz officiated and burial was in Dixie-Bear Creek Cemetery in Cleveland, OK. Casket bearers were Billy Wayne Smith, Edward Fletcher, Jacob Battiest, Jason Holmes, Frank Smith, and Ryan Worch. Honorary casket bearers were PFC Jared Battiest, Jim Burt, Jack Goodell, Phil Johnson, Leon McQuay, the Sperry Thunder Softball Team, and the Knights of the Round Table.
Melvin was born August 22, 1946 in Dixie, OK to Frank S. and Margaret P. (Huffman) Smith. He passed away August 28, 2011 in Tulsa, OK at the age of 65.
Melvin was a laborer and construction worker. He coached softball for 23 years. Melvin enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Smith; daughters, Leslee Smith and Margaret Smith of Sperry; sister, Agnes Raymer and husband Calvin of Tyler, TX; and brother, Stanley Smith and wife Betty of Raulston, and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Margaret Smith; brothers, Daniel Smith and Billy Lee Smith; and mother-in-law, Maxine Goodman.
