Casket bearers were Damon Jobe, Will Jobe, Matthew Jobe, Jeff Jobe, Carl Jobe, and Phillip Jobe, Honorary casket bearers were all of the “Long-Timers” of Sperry as well as each and every friend.
Louis Preston Jobe was born the oldest son of Oma L. and Florence L. (Dale) Jobe on May 17, 1925. His birth certificate officially lists his birth date as May 23. Doc Humphrey somehow got it wrong. Preston went home to his creator and sustainer in life on February 16, 2011.
Preston’s family came to Sperry in covered wagons from Missouri. He was a lifelong resident of Sperry with only brief stints in California and in Tulsa. Preston is one of those individuals who endure the hardships of growing up through the Oklahoma Dust Bowl and the Depression. Like most folks they probably didn’t fully realize how tough times were and how poor they were because everyone was in the same boat, everyone pulled together. They simply were challenged with the effort of surviving and survive they did.
Preston attended Sperry Schools and always had to work as well as get an education while participating in sports and other school activities. His jobs helped his family. He had a paper route, cleaned classrooms at school, he built fires in the boilers early of the morning, he tended to family chores, he had many responsibilities. Preston recently mused about the record breaking weather we have experience and he recounted of how in 1930 when record breaking weather was occurring they had just moved into a log cabin on the south side of town and of how his father would not allow a fire in the fireplace for fear of a fire at night. It was because of a fire in a boarding house fire ran by his mother that he nearly perished. It made for an extremely cold winter.
Preston left school to join the Army and served as a Medic during the Korean conflict.
April 23, 1948 Preston married the love of his life Mary Todd Slagle. Preston and Mary were just two months short of their sixtieth wedding anniversary when Mary passed away. They briefly made their residence in Tulsa where they both worked, but came home shortly thereafter. To this union three sons were born: David, Robert and Buel.
Preston had a thirty-three year career with the Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company becoming the appliance repair manager. He was proud to be a member of the “Five Diamond Club” in recognition of those employees whom served the Company for more than Twenty-five Years.
Preston was always active in his community, church and families life. He and Mary were always doing things to help others and to took interest in many many young people whose lives they impacted. They were active in Scouting, Zion’s League, sponsored “Teen Town” and they proudly supported the FFA Program.
Preston is a fourth generation member of the restoration movement and raised his family in those values. He was always proud of the gospel heritage and the calling of the saints to be about the Kindom Building Process.
Left to mourn the passing of Preston are his sons, David Jobe and wife Linda of Sperry, Robert Jobe and wife Patricia of Delaware, and Buel Jobe of Sperry; four grandchildren, Angelia Jobe of Owasso, Damon Jobe of Owasso, William Jobe of Delaware, and Matthew Jobe of Delaware; nephew, Jeff Jobe of San Antonio, TX; along with many, many friends and relatives.
Preston was preceded in death by his bride Mary Jobe; parents, Oma and Florence Jobe; and brother Herbert Jobe.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to The Cliff and Helen Grace Herrington Foundation, PO Box 876, Sperry, OK 74073.
