Leo was born June 20, 1925 in Afton, Oklahoma to John and Mable E. (Pyatt) Oakley. He passed away March 1, 2011 in Catoosa, OK.
Leo was born the 8th of 13 children. He worked as a farmer until he entered the US Army in 1952. After serving during the Korean Conflict, he returned home in 1954. Leo married Pearlene Mitchell in 1956. He worked the rest of his life as an anodizer and metal finisher. He loved to coon hunt and fish. Leo loved his family and was always a part of everything his kids or grandkids were doing. He was a die-hard Chevy man and if you drove a Ford, you had to park in the street. He liked to tease people. If you ever got picked on by Leo, you knew he liked you. He was “Daddy” to Cheryl and Kathy, “Dad” to Ron, “Grandpa” to Justin, Susan, and Michelle, and “Poppie Doc” to Sarah and Ashley. He always said he hated cats, but we sure have some memorable stories that involved cats. Pearlene loved rodeos. They made several trips to the national finals in Oklahoma City and they always went to the Claremore Rodeo. Leo always had a coon hound. His mom almost chopped one’s tail off once because she thought it was a snake. He really enjoyed roller skating and was very good at it. We spent many hours at the Wheel Roller Rink by Mowhawk Park. Leo was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pearlene Oakley of the home; daughters, Cheryl Hoot and husband John of Owasso, and Kathy Crase and husband Noel of Yale, OK; son, Ron Oakley and wife Deanna of Sperry; grandchildren, Susan Human and husband Jimmy of Sperry, Michelle Oakley of Sperry, Justin Hoot of Owasso, Sarah Crase of Yale, OK, and Ashley Crase of Yale, OK; sisters, Paulene Harrison, Caulene King, Fern Overacre, Rowena Countryman; numerous nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mable Oakley; brothers, L. “Buck” Oakley, Vernon Oakley, Nolan Oakley, Charles Oakley, and Bobby Lee Oakley; sisters, Cleo Oakley, Emmalease Ryder, Dayna Linn; and pal, Goldie (his golden retriever.)
